God’s Quilt

This month our focus is going to be on quilts. I hope you enjoy the following post.

Dear Friends,

Recently I had to travel by plane, and the flight was magnificent.  I was awed by the breath-taking view from my window seat.  Being a creative person who loves to sew, I couldn’t help but compare the puffy clouds to poly-fil®.  You know—the batting that we place between the top and bottom of our quilts.  Then it hit me, Heaven and earth is just a patchwork quilt with poly-fil® clouds.  God is looking at the heavenly pattern, while all we see is the plainness of the underside.

If you’ve ever looked at the underside of a quilt, you’ve probably noticed that the stitches aren’t always even.  Yet, when you view the topside, you forget about the uneven stitches because the beauty of the whole pattern captivates you.

Sometimes we get sick of the underside of the quilt.  The pain, disappointments, and failures are like needle pricks, and we’re burdened with the uneven stitches of life.  If we could only see with our eyes the heavenly pattern, maybe we’d understand it all.  Maybe we’d understand why people have to die before the sunset of life, or why some have to suffer physical, mental, or emotional pain, day after day.  Maybe we’d understand about life’s disappointments, broken hearts, and war.  But for now, who can figure it out?  We’ll have to be content and keep making our stitches, trusting God to cover us with His love.  He’s the only One who knows what the finished quilt looks like.  Yet, Jesus knew we’d feel like this at times, so in His Word, He left us some comforting information about the quilt and it’s Creator.

Long ago, even before he made the world, God chose us to be his very own, through what Christ would do for us; he decided then to make us holy in his eyes, without a single fault—we who stand before him covered with his love. Ephesians 1:4 TLB

I will not leave you comfortless:  I will come to you.  John 14:18 KJV

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you:  not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  John 14:27 KJV

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.  In the world you shall have tribulation:  but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.  John 16:33 KJV

Let not your heart be troubled:  ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many mansions:  if it were not so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.  John 14:1-3

Life is hard.  He told us so, but He also said the completed pattern is beautiful.  Until it’s finished, He has provided us with His comforting quilt complete with poly-fil® clouds.  It’s amazing, when you’re under God’s quilt, you can feel the warmth and peace of His love envelop you in spite of uneven stitches.  Hold tight to His quilt!  God’s blessings be upon you.

Lovingly, His child
